What a MIAM is
A MIAM is a short, individual meeting with an accredited family mediator. In England and Wales, most people must attend one before applying to the family court about children (a C100 application) or finances on divorce (a Form A application), unless an exemption applies. The meeting takes about an hour, and an accredited mediator can sign the certificate that the court asks for. The certificate is treated as valid for four months.
Common questions, answered plainly
Do I need a MIAM before going to court?
For most child and financial applications, yes, unless an exemption applies. See which forms need a MIAM and exemptions.
Does the other person have to attend?
No. A MIAM is an individual meeting. The other person is invited to their own, but if they decline, the applicant can still get a certificate and apply to court.
How long is a MIAM certificate valid?
Four months from signing.
Can a MIAM be done online?
Yes. MIAM UK conducts MIAMs online by video across England and Wales.
How much does it cost?
£138 including VAT for a standard MIAM, £222 including VAT for an urgent one, or free for those who qualify for legal aid.
