Online MIAMs

An online MIAM is a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting held by video call rather than in a room. It is exactly as valid as an in-person MIAM, the mediator signs your court form in the same way, and it is usually quicker to arrange.

We conduct our MIAMs online across England and Wales. For most people it is the simplest route: no travel, a wider choice of appointment times, and the same accredited mediator you would meet in person.

Are online MIAMs valid for court?

Yes. An online MIAM carries exactly the same weight as one held in person. The Family Mediation Council recognises MIAMs conducted by video, the meeting follows the same Standards, and an FMC-accredited mediator signs your court form in the same way at the end. The court does not treat an online MIAM any differently.

Online delivery also removed one of the older reasons people claimed an exemption, that no mediator was available within fifteen miles. With a valid online MIAM available wherever you are, distance is rarely a barrier now. There is more on this on MIAM exemptions.

How an online MIAM works

  1. Book your appointment

Choose a time that suits you. Because there is no travel involved, online appointments are often available sooner and across a wider range of times.

  2. Receive your video link

You are sent a secure link and simple joining instructions. You can use a phone, tablet or computer, whatever you are comfortable with.

  3. Attend privately, on your own

Join from somewhere private. Like every MIAM, it is held with you alone; your ex-partner has their own separate meeting.

  4. Leave with clear next steps

The mediator explains your options, completes the safety assessment, and signs your court form where appropriate.

Who online MIAMs suit

Quick answers

Online MIAMs: common questions

Is an online MIAM as valid as an in-person one?

Yes. An online MIAM meets the same FMC Standards and results in the same signed court form. The court treats it exactly the same as a MIAM held in person.

What do I need for an online MIAM?

A phone, tablet or computer with a camera and a reasonable internet connection, and somewhere private to talk for about an hour. You are sent a secure link and simple instructions beforehand.

Will I be in the same video call as my ex-partner?

No. Like every MIAM, an online MIAM is held with you on your own. Your ex-partner is invited to their own separate meeting.

Does an online MIAM cost the same?

Yes, £138 including VAT per person, the same as an in-person MIAM. If you qualify for legal aid, it is free. Full pricing is on our MIAM costs page.

Can I get my court form signed after an online MIAM?

Yes. The mediator signs the relevant form in the same way as they would in person, and it is sent to you or your solicitor. See the MIAM certificate.

What if I am not confident with video calls?

That is common, and the joining instructions are straightforward. If you would like to test the link beforehand or talk through any concerns, call us on 0330 999 0959 and we will help.
